Digital guest book
Also called an electronic guest book — a web page that does the job of the book by the door, without the door.
"Digital guest book" covers a lot of different things, and it is worth separating them, because they are not equally useful. Some are a tablet at the venue running a form. Some are a phone number guests text. Some record audio or video. Some are a shared photo album with a comment box attached.
What they have in common is that they are usually a device or a service placed next to the celebration. What we build is different in kind: the celebration has its own website, and the signing wall is part of it, not an accessory rented for the evening.
That difference decides what happens afterwards. A tablet gets returned. A number gets disconnected. A page at its own address is still there in five years, holding the same messages in the same order.
Digital, and actually live
The word digital gets applied to anything that is not paper, including things that are functionally a locked box: guests put messages in, nobody sees them until later.
A wish appears the moment it is written. The person celebrating watches the page fill up in real time, and the person signing sees their words land the second they send them — no refresh, no waiting for a batch to be published.
So the honest description is not "digital" but "live". Everyone is looking at the same page at the same time, and it changes while they watch.
What an electronic guest book needs to get right
Three things decide whether guests actually use one.
- It has to open instantly on a phone. Anything that asks for an account loses most of the room.
- It has to show the guest their message landed. A form that swallows the entry gets one attempt per guest and no more.
- It has to be readable later. The messages are the point; the interface should get out of their way.
Reviewed before it is published
An open page on the public internet needs a filter. Submissions are reviewed before publication, which keeps the wall reading the way it was intended without the host having to watch it.
