# Online vs Paper Guest Book — Which to Choose | June14

> An honest comparison of paper and online guest books: who can sign, what gets written, what survives, and when paper is still the right answer.

# Online guest book or paper guest book

Both work. They collect different things from different people, and the choice is really about who you want in the book.

This question comes up late in the planning, usually as a budget line, and it is treated as a matter of taste. It is not. Paper and online guest books collect materially different content from materially different groups of people, and it is worth knowing which one before you choose.

What follows is not an argument that paper is bad. There are celebrations where paper is plainly the better object.

## Who can sign

This is the real difference, and everything else follows from it. A paper book can only be signed by someone standing next to it. An online one can be signed by anyone you send the link to.

For a small celebration where everyone invited is in the room, that gap is nearly zero. For a wedding with family abroad, a milestone birthday with fifty years of friendships behind it, or a retirement after four employers, the gap is most of the guest list.

## What gets written

Paper produces short entries written in a queue. There is someone behind you, the pen is shared, and the format encourages a name and a line. The result is a record of attendance with warmth attached.

A page people write on from their own phone, in their own time, produces longer and more specific entries — often written days later, once they have thought of the right thing. It also produces more of them, because there is no queue and no single pen.

## What survives

A paper book is an object. It can be held, it ages well, and it is the better keepsake if what you want is a thing on a shelf. It also exists in exactly one copy, in one house, and it cannot be searched or shared.

A page can be reread from anywhere, by anyone you give it to, and every entry stays exactly as it was written. Families tend to revisit it on anniversaries, which a book in a drawer rarely gets.

## When paper is the right answer

If the celebration is small, everyone invited will be there, and the object itself matters — a bound book, good paper, one afternoon — choose paper. It is the better artefact and the simpler decision.

Choose an online one when a meaningful part of the people who care about this person will not be in the room, or when you want the messages to keep arriving after the day itself.

## You can have both

Plenty of celebrations put a book on the table and a link on the place card. The book collects the room; the page collects everyone else. They are not in competition.

## Frequently asked

**Is an online guest book better than a paper one?**

Neither is better in general. Paper is the better physical keepsake for a small celebration where everyone attends. An online one reaches people who cannot be there and collects longer, more specific messages.

**Can we use both a paper and an online guest book?**

Yes, and many celebrations do. The book collects the people in the room; the link collects everyone who could not come.

**Do older guests use online guest books?**

Usually, yes — if it opens in one tap and asks for nothing. The barrier is registration, not age.

**What if guests do not have the link on the day?**

Most celebrations put it where people are already looking: the invitation, the place card, the order of service, a screen.
